On June 4th, 2019, Granger Smith, the country music singer, was cherishing a special evening with his children, preparing for the CMT Music Awards and his upcoming tour in Nashville. Sadly, tragedy struck when his youngest son accidentally fell into the pool while Granger was assisting his daughter London with gymnastics. Despite his desperate efforts, he couldn’t save little River, and the devastating loss shattered his world.

In the aftermath of River’s death, Granger embarked on a dark and painful journey, haunted by the harrowing event every time he closed his eyes. To add to the torment, he faced relentless criticism from people blaming him for the accident. Despite trying to return to the stage with a smile and a song, he found himself crumbling inside.

However, Granger’s story didn’t end there. In the midst of his struggles, he discovered the strength to overcome the darkness. Now, he is driven to offer solace and hope to people worldwide who have endured tragedy.

He draws an analogy between life and a river—full of twists and turns, polluted by others’ criticism, and blocked by tragic events. Yet, like a river, we can find the courage to continue downstream, to keep moving forward.

Just as rivers don’t flow solely on their own strength, Granger realized that trying to endure alone wouldn’t lead to progress. Instead, connecting to a greater source allows us to find the strength and faith to live on even after loss. This powerful story of new life emerging from death serves as an inspiration, urging every reader to embrace resilience and face life’s challenges with the determination to live “Like a River.”

Review Book of Like a River: Finding the Faith and Strength to Move Forward after Loss and Heartache

Do our losses serve a purpose? How do we find the faith and strength to carry on after heartbreak? Granger Smith shares his reflections on the verses that offered him comfort and answers following the tragic loss of his son.

Have you ever experienced the pain of losing something significant in your life?

It could have been a job, the very foundation of your income and stability, suddenly taken away, leaving you shaken to your core.

Perhaps it was a dream you had pursued relentlessly, only to fall short of achieving it. That moment when you realize your lifelong aspiration may not come to fruition can leave you feeling utterly hopeless, as if the driving force that once got you out of bed no longer holds its power.

Or maybe it was a relationship that you believed was destined to last a lifetime. The one person you thought was your soulmate decides otherwise, and it feels like a part of you is missing.

In my case, my loss was a someone—my three-year-old son, who tragically drowned.

People often express their pain to me, but then hesitate, believing that their losses are insignificant compared to mine. However, I firmly reject this idea. Every person’s story is relevant to their own life, and pain is pain—it cannot be compared or measured against someone else’s.

We are all akin to a river in life. We may pretend to control our own little portion of the waterfront, but in truth, we cannot control the force of the river itself. While we can exert some effort and persistence to maintain balance, when the river’s turbulence reaches a certain level, even the most skilled sailors may find themselves capsizing.

We cannot dictate the speed, direction, or obstacles that come our way. The only thing we can control is how much or how little we surrender to the Source of the river. Until we connect with that Source, everything we do downstream is futile and powerless to bring about true change. It is in connecting with that greater force that we find the strength to carry on and navigate life’s challenges with a renewed sense of faith and hope.
